If Pakistan and Bangladesh reunited, would its strength increase?

If Pakistan and Bangladesh reunited, would its strength increase?

If Pakistan and Bangladesh reunited, would its strength increase?

If you genuinely believe this, then you got the wrong idea friend. In terms of military, Pakistan is of course stronger, however, it is for the most part the economy that determines a country's strength.

A “reunited” Pakistan and Bangladesh would only suffer from an unequal economy, overpopulation and extremely high poverty rates. Bangladesh seems to be a peaceful environment, in contrast to Pakistan which has been under political instability since its inception for example, the power vacuum between military and civil institutions, terrorism, religious extremism and economic crises.

But Bangladesh also has its problems. For example, climate change and rising sea levels. There is great danger that Bangladesh will come underwater or erode away. That would put an enormous burden on Pakistan.

Let's just hope that doesn't happen.

In the end, Pakistan has conflict with India. Bangladesh is surrounded by India and Myanmar and so far the three seem to get along well, but the same cannot be said of India and Pakistan. If Bangladesh had been "reunited" with Pakistan, it would also be hostile to India and that's not beneficial.

  • Economic Condition

It is needless to say that Pakistan is currently heavily indebted to foreign debts and its GDP growth has been almost the lowest in the whole region. Whereas, Bangladesh has already proven its worth as the Rising South Asian tiger often beating the powerhouse India in several aspects, though briefly. A merger of these 2 countries would cost Bangladesh heavily and incite another economic distress it did bear for 23 years (1947–1971). Mergers are meant for synergy but in this case, it will be suicidal for one party.

  • Geopolitical stance

Bangladesh has maintained a sustainable and non-partisan relationship whereas Pakistan has maintained multiple-partisan relationships which is now churning cost out of it. In terms of military Pakistan has undoubtedly higher firepower however, constant war mode with its neighbors has also weakened its economy whereas, Bangladesh is in a war-free condition allowing it to flourish. A merger would certainly draw Bangladesh bearing the consequences of wrong dictation of their Pakistani counterpart.

  • Social Consideration

The confederation of Pakistan broke down just based on this acute and crucial factor. Apart from being bound by religious affinity, Bangladesh and Pakistan hardly share any commonalities. Furthermore the constant nagging from the Pakistani side to see Bangladeshis as the inferior race can also be held as the main divisor. 1971 happened because of this and such attitude towards to Bangladeshis hasn’t subsided yet.

Mergers are meant for equals and complements. Pakistan and Bangladesh have diverged to such an extent that a forced merger would mean only loss without having any synergy on anything
